Sony Ericsson w810i

Sony_w810i.jpg

The Hanft family finally joined the rest of the world and got cell phones. I guess I should say I joined the rest of the world since Betsy has had a cell phone for years now. I did my research before making my purchase and wanted to get a good camera phone. I decided on the Sony Ericsson w810i. In addition to one of the best mp3 players on the market, this phone has (by cell phone standards) a terrific camera built in.

At two megapixels, the Sony Ericsson w810i may be at the low end of the camera market, but it is at the high end of the phone market. Two megapixels translates to about a 5×7 print at 300dpi, and you could probably stretch it to 8×10 if you really needed a big print. As you can imagine, you have to accept some limitations with a camera in a phone, but I have to say that I was impressed beyond my low expectations. In low light it was somewhat grainy, but still acceptable. In macro situations in performs wonderfully. The lens is a bit too wide so you have to get in close if you want your subject to fill the frame.

The camera is actully pretty full of features. It has auto focus, a self-portrait mirror, a light, self-timer, macro mode, effects (black and white, sepia, negative, solarize), white balance, different shutter sounds, and white balance. It has video mode for small video. It uses a removable memory card. I use a 4gb card (mainly for music storage) so there is plenty of room for photos. You can even change the shutter sound if you want a different click.

One fun feature of this camera is panoramic mode. Unlike the crappy cropping panoramic cameras of the past, this feature actually requires you to take three photos and the camera will stitch them together for you. Here is a quick example:

Basement_Small.jpg

This is my basement, and the camera is hand held in this low light situation. You can see the slight double image at the one third mark next to the camera case due to me not lining up the second shot with the camera’s preview of the first image. You can click on the image above for a full resolution version. I didn’t correct anything, so this gives you an idea of what you will get straight out of the phone.

The biggest benefit of having this camera phone is that you always have a camera with you. The picture quality of most phone cameras is almost worthless, so if you plan on using the photos taken on your camera, get something decent. Right now the Sony Ericsson w810i is one of the best on the market.

Canon AE1

Canon_AE1.jpg

The biggest hole in my camera collection (besides a hasselblad or some other really nice camera) is a fully manual 35mm SLR. I have wanted a Pentax k1000 ever since I used one in high school, but one has never presented itself to me. My Pentax ZX5n is a great camera, but it is too easy to rely on the automatic settings and let the camera do all the work. Sometimes you just want a wonderful old machine. The cranking to advance the film. The needle light meter. The manual focus. The physical motion to set the aperture and shutter speed. And don’t forget the glorious sound when the shutter releases. If there is a more wonderful sound in the universe, I would like to hear it.

Well, you can imagine my delight when a friend of my Betsy’s learned of my camera collection and donated a Canon AE1 to my cause. What a great little machine! It was well cared for, and once I replaced the battery this thing was ready to go. I won’t bore you with the technical specs but rather close with a recommendation that you pick up an old manual SLR. As digital continues to make these old beasts “obsolete” the price is a steal. If you are like me and you learned to take pictures with these cameras, reconnecting with the past might just reinvigorate your love for photography.

Gakken Pinhole Camera

Thursday, December 28th, 2006

Gakken_Pinhole.jpg

I got a nice Christmas present from my friend Travis. If you spend much time on Flickr, he is the guy with the great collection of toy cameras (link to his Gakken Pinhole set). He gave me a Gakken camera. Never heard of it? It is a little plastic camera from Japan that comes in a kit with a magazine. I can’t read Japanese, but the magazine was really nice, and had pictures describing several interesting pinhole experiments. I am not sure if a camera kit magazine is a common thing in Japan, but it sure seem foreign (and wonderful) to me.

I called this a pinhole camera, but it actually comes with a plastic lens that can be used if you don’t want to do the pinhole thing. The shutter is probably around 100th of a second, or you can use an unorthodox bulb mode. Push the button one way to cock the shutter. Push it back the other way and it snaps accross. To use the bulb mode, you cock the shutter. Then push the second lever up and the shutter will open. Push this lever back down and the shutter closes. Turn the know on top to advance the film. The knob has a mark on it too show when you have advanced one complete frame. The Gakken doesn’t have many extras, but it does come with a tripod mound which will come in handy for long pinhole exposures.

The entire camera is plastic and it was made for fun. Double exposures are simple and so are overlapping frames. If you can get your hands on one of these cameras, I recommend it. I don’t have any photos taken with this camera to show you yet, but I recommend Travis’s gallery from the link above.

Updated 35mm Lego Camera Design

Wednesday, July 5th, 2006

Front3_4.jpg

Inspired by George Bristol’s variation on the film advance mechanism of my Lego camera, I have reworked the design of my 35mm Lego camera. The new camera has several things going for it. Overall it is slightly smaller. It now has an internal shutter mechanism which replaces the clumsy swinging door of the earlier model. Most importantly, I came up with a simple way to rewind the film so now the camera no longer needs to be unloaded in the dark. I have tested a couple of rolls of film with it and the improvements make this a very fun little toy! I am seriously starting to consider selling these, perhaps on Ebay. Would anybody be interested? What do you think it would be worth?

Here are some photos and explanations of the new and improved 35mm Lego camera…

Canon EOS 5D

Sunday, April 23rd, 2006

Canon_EOS_5D.jpg The Canon EOS 5D: the digital camera you have been dreaming about. No, I am not fortunate to own one of these, but the company I work for does and I have been playing with it for the last few weeks. Wow. This is the most expensive camera I have ever used, and probably the best. If you can afford this piece of equipment, I highly recommend it. Amazon sells the body for $3,000 and the 24-105mm lens for another $1,200. Unfortunately that is just the beginning and you start to see that this camera can easily become a money pit. You will most likely need accessories. For example, it doesn’t have a built-in flash, so an external flash is probably a good idea. At 12.8 megapixels, storage quickly becomes an issue, too. The camera is so fast even at the highest setting that a 2gb card gets filled very fast. In addition to a couple large compact flash cards, you will probably need an external harddrive for your computer. Even 200gb will get filled faster than you would expect. You should probably upgrade your version of Photoshop. An extra lens or two wouldn’t hurt. The battery pack is pretty cool. It never ends. However, if you have the money, this is an amazing camera.

Philips Keychain Digital Camera

PhillipsMiniCamera.jpg

I got Philips’ keychain digital camera for Christmas. I think it cost about $20, and surely was a tempting stocking stuffer last Christmas. While it may be a nice little camera for my collection, I can’t say it is a great performer. Here are some of my criticism of the keychain camera…

Lego Panoramic Camera

LegoPanoramic.jpg

LegoTractorc.jpg

Soon after I built my 35mm Lego pinhole camera, it struck me that there wasn’t any reason why I couldn’t just make the camera longer and create a panoramic version of the Lego camera. While I prefer a more square format, I couldn’t help but build this camera. The result was a camera that produced a 78mm x 24mm negative. Since the Lego pinhole camera doesn’t have a mask, the entire negative is esposed including the sprocket holes, which looks something like this:

Nikon Coolpix Cameras

Coolpix.jpg

Coolpix cameras are a great product line. I bought my Nikon Coolpix 5000 back when 5 megapixels was really a big deal. More recently, I picked up a used Coolpix 990 that I use almost exclusively for timelapse photography. I know it is terribly late to do a product review of these seemingly outdated cameras, but you might be surprised how much life these cameras have if you get a little creative…

Iskra Medium Format Camera

Iskra_Open_Case.jpg

I have wanted a medium format folding camera for a long time now, so my birthday was the perfect excuse to make this dream a reality. After some internet research and watching the Ebay auctions, I finally decided on the Iskra that I purchased from Jurgen Kreckel. Jurgen has a great reputation for restoring old folding cameras. His Ebay auctions are mini history lessons, and his website (certo6.com)is a great resource for anyone wanting to learn more about this genre of cameras. When buying a camera this old, it is nice to be able to trust the seller and have confidence that you are getting a completely usable camera.
